In this blog I take a closer look at what affirmations are, how they work and how you can create your favourite affirmations. Affirmations are one of the core elements to help you develop a positive mindset and banish destructive, negative thoughts. Our brains were hardwired with a negative bias throughout thousands of years of human evolution for one reason. To keep us safe. Now, for most of us, our day-to-day lives don’t present the same threats, yet our minds are still hardwired to look for threats.
How do affirmations work?
Affirmations exploit the fact that our minds don’t know the difference between reality and what we tell them. When we allow that negative bias to rule, it will physically and mentally impact your behaviour. Think about how you would feel if you had to speak on stage at a conference tomorrow. You would probably feel very nervous, and that shot of adrenaline would make your heart race, make you shaky and possibly even lightheaded. That’s because your brain doesn’t know that you are simply afraid of speaking in front of thousands of people. It thinks you’re scared because your life is in danger, and you need to be ready to escape or fight.
Affirmations fix positive thoughts about yourself in your subconscious mind. They are powerful, positive statements which you can repeat out loud, write down or chant – however you feel most connected with them – to get them embedded into your unconscious mind. After all, it is that part of your brain forms all of your beliefs. When changing your mind and mindset, it’s the subconscious part we wish to work with. The conscious part is the part actively living your every day, but the subconscious part is the piece that takes up a whopping 90% and is 1 million times more powerful than the conscious.
But one thing I find my followers struggle with the most is knowing which affirmations to choose from. Yes, you can Google ‘affirmations for confidence’ or ‘affirmations for self-love’, but if you’re just plucking ideas from the internet, how can you truly connect with them? The answer is that you probably won’t. So how can you pick your favourite affirmations? The ones which will help banish negative emotions and set you on course for a positive mindset?
How to work out your favourite affirmations
The answer lies in the concept that affirmations can empower you to improve an area of your life which needs it. Think about areas of your work or personal life which you find attract the most negative thoughts. Every thought you have is like a magnet, attracting the like to it so if you have negative thoughts, you will attract negativity in all its forms into your life.
You should choose affirmations which target those individual negative thoughts and insecurities so that you can banish them and replace them with positive beliefs. So, you need to recognise what those negative thoughts and limiting beliefs are, then see how you can flip them into a positive re-frame.
Here are some examples to give you a little inspiration:
Should your favourite affirmations change?
Mindset work is something which will remain part of your life forever, but your favourite affirmations will change over time. That’s because as you face new challenges and grow as a person, you’ll find your limiting beliefs change too. I have some core affirmations which have stayed the same over the years, but others come and go. Remember that they are YOUR favourite affirmations and no one else’s, so be honest with yourself. Work out what’s holding you back and you’ll find the areas you need to work on your subconscious mind.
You need to absolutely believe your affirmations and trust the process. Just writing them down or saying them without connecting to them and TRULY believing they can be your reality won’t make that key subconscious shift… but believing them will. Say them with conviction, say them as YOU, not as someone else reading them to you and believe them. It will raise your vibration and connection with the universe, instilling a powerful, positive mindset which will be your very best asset in every area of your life.
